TAG | merry-go-round

It is the last friday of the month again, so the The Merry go round is turning once more. The merry go round group it is a group of artists/crafts-women as they link hands around the world and tell you a little about their lives and art. We are group of 11 women from all over the world and are creative with different materials.

For this last Friday of October the theme is : Do you do fairs/shows?  If so, share some hints and your experience. If not – why not

viltalakim, vilt felt,

Well I used to do some fairs last year, and some were good others not…  I have learned the following things:

  • Do some research on the fair, whom is the public, are there many visitors
  • do they need to pay an entrance fee
  • what are the participation costs
  • will you be getting sales/ responses afterwards too? I mean I give workshops and I tried to sell my items in Amsterdam once… it was 2 hours from my place and normal when I do a local fair I get people coming back to me for a workshop… but this time that didn’t happen  while standing in Amsterdam…
  • make on bag with rope, tie-raps, tape, wire, scissor, washcloth pins, extra paper a marker and add it in your car as last thing so you have it easily at hand when you start emptying the car and starting with setting up your table.  With an empty table you can climb on  t to add some ropes to hang your stuff on. doing so when you have all your stuff on the table isn’t working…
  •  The most important of all, make a test setup setting at home…. picture that and take that picture along so you know exactly where you want to place what, Saves you a lot of decision time at the fair….

  • I always try to offer small workshops at my table… so children (and adults) can make something small for €2,50. takes about 5-10 minutes  and all that time people are standing in front of my table, having plenty of time to see everything..
  • when I don;t have i kids for a workshop I try to keep on felting… people love to see how something is made and start asking questions, when 1 person is standing here, many others will likely to stop and watch too …. and it keeps me bussyand  making new stock , so if you don’t sell much it doesn’t feel as a waisted day
  • Talk to people…. Your stuff will not be sold when you don’t tell people about it. How you made it or what’s the story behind it, you can even start talking about the weather when you see people shivering :)
  • Visit other fairs and try to get on that mailing list too.

You can check more post about my fair experiences by searching my site for  “fairs”.

Meanwhile I am curious to read what other merriers have for experiences…:

Merry go round October

Gosh, Is it really the last Friday of the month???? I seam to have missed some days here….

Anyway time for a new merry go round and this month the topic is “ Get out of your comfort zone and try something new”  Thema deze maand is: “Kom uit je vertrouwde omgeving en probeer eens iets nieuws.”

Well as I consider my wetfelting and making flowerarrangings to be my comfortzone, I have tried many things last year.

  • I made a mosaique together with my sisters and mother for her birthday.

  • I teached my self (with you tube)  how to chrochet a granny square and made a huge blanket with it.

  • I tried ceramics at Mitsy’s place twice.

  • I had a needle felting evening and learned how to use wire in them.

I also tried natural dyeing with Eucalypthus, learned how to wetfelt with raw wool, how to make a jacket, and many other things I am surely already forgotten:) Ik heb ook ervaringen opgedaan met het natuurlijk verven met Eucalypthus, vilten met de ruwe ongewassenvacht, jas leren vilten en heel veel andere dingen die ik zeker ben vergeten:)

But you know what? I love doing different things besides wetfelting. I just need to be carefull I don’t get carried away in it. Otherwise I don’t have time for wetfelting :( Maar weet je wat?
